Mayor Annise Parker

City of Houston Budget Balancer

When Mayor Parker took office in January 2009, she inherited a city budget deficit and declining revenues. She cut more than $200 million in spending by reorganizing city departments, eliminating duplication and waste and working closely with city employees to save money through furloughs and streamlining essential services. She proposed an additional $100 million in cuts in the next year's budget.

The default setting on this site shows how and where Mayor Parker planned to make the cuts. Houstonians were encouraged to use the tools on this site to try their hand at closing the budget shortfall.
